S & G Farms is a family owned and operated small business in South Texas, and we strive to share our love for nature through the products that we make. Those products include many varieties of living terrariums, and real butterfly wing jewelry!

An Interview with owners: Zac & Amanda Stayton, Taylor & Gavin Griffith

What drew you to plants?

Zac is a horticulturist, so he naturally loves and knows all about plants. Taylor and I (Amanda) became involved because we both enjoy crafting and nature, so we all three thought, why not combine our love/interest and start a family business that promotes natural beauty and sustainability?

How did you discover your talent?

Zac realized his talent in college...he realized that being horticulturist meant that he would always be able to “play in the dirt” so that settled it! Taylor has always been creative and crafty so when Zac brought home some preserved butterflies, she knew that she wanted to continue to showcase their beauty, so hence the necklaces and shadow boxes. Amanda’s is still discovering her talent in the plant world!

How did S&G Farms come about?

Zac and Taylor are siblings, and after their grandfather passed away a couple of years ago, they decided that they both wanted to honor his life by creating a small business that would promote their grandfather’s love of creating new things. He was an avid woodworker and nature lover, so S & G Farms emerged as a way to honor his memory and his love of nature and creation.

The name is pretty cool, what made you decide on this?

S & G Farms is a combination of Stayton and Griffith, our last names. Zac and I are venturing out into the farming world, so we really wanted to promote the idea of farming and sustainable living, so our name gives us room to grow with our products/creations. So I guess that you could say that we are all definitely crafters and emerging farmers!

What drives you to create?
Our love of nature definitely is our inspiration. We also reuse products as much as possible (e.g. the butterflies and the wine corks for our wine cork magnets).

How do you get inspired?

Seeing something broken and trying to figure out how it can be re-purposed in to some sort of planter!

Zac & Amanda Stayton
How would you describe your style?

Natural, sustainable, plant and earth friendly

What is your favorite part about your creative process?

Our favorite part is our collaboration!  We bounce ideas off of one another and get to share this experience as a family.

What are your favorite items?

Hmmm, Zac’s favorite items are the Tillandsias (air plants) and anything that blooms! Taylor’s favorites are the butterfly necklaces and shadow boxes, and Amanda’s favorite items are the wine cork magnets.

What environment do you like to work in?

We have an open air barn where we grow our Airplants and succulents it looks out over our garden, and is a great place to work and get inspired by nature!

Do you listen to music while you work, and if so, what do you listen to?

Definitely! It varies from person to person, but we all enjoy tunes while we create. Zac is partial to Paul Simon and the Gourds!

How much time do you spend in the studio?

All of our products are made to order, so it varies based on our product output. We also try to spend a few hours every week making new product prototypes to test before we make them available for purchase.

What are your plans for the near future?

We are working on expanding our business to include a plant nursery and also an ecocape design firm called S&G Ecoscapes. S&G Ecoscapes will focus on creating ecoscapes that include butterfly/hummingbird landscape designs, vegetable/fruit gardens and livestock gardens (for chickens, etc.). We are also trying to educate the Houston Area on a variety of sustainability topics from, gardening to rainwater collection to beekeeping. So we are working on expanding each and every day!

Who would play you in the movie version of your life?

I think Chris Hemsworth (Thor) would do my part justice ; )
