An Interview with Michelle of Seaweed & Sage
When did you first start your craft?
I have been making my own bath concoctions for as long as I can remember! I had an A-HA moment one night when I was having a bath – I felt like I needed a creative outlet and didn’t know which direction to go and realized I was sitting in it! I knew I loved bath products and creating bath products and had a vision for an all organic and vegan, herbal based products for bath and body.

How did Seaweed & Sage come about? The name is pretty cool, what made you decide on this?
I am often inspired by nature – I love all the natural elements and healing properties of herbs and the various organic plants and medicines from all cultures and wanted something to represent the different ingredients that I would be using in my products – I started out with bath salts – elements from the sea (seaweed from the sea) and I was adding elements from the earth (sage from the earth). Seaweed & Sage represents both of these elements - water and earth.
What drives you to create?
I will often find a product that I like and I think I can make that better – and make it organic and vegan. I like experimenting and often I’ll get friends and customers asking me to make something specific for them and it usually turns out that I love it and end up making batches of it for others!
How do you get inspired?
Nature. Nature inspires me. I find that nature has so much to offer everyone and it has all the elements we need to live healthy and happy lives. |
I love all the creating and designing of my products but through this whole process I found I really love the designing and presentation of products too! I love it all – from finding new and different ingredients, and growing many of my own herbs, to creating labels and creative packaging, to presentation at craft sales and in shows and coming up with new and different products! It’s a beautiful environment to “work” in – I love the people I meet and the different roads I travel.
What are your favorite items?
I’m a straight-up bath kinda girl – so I absolutely love bath salts – they are simple, yet I know how beneficial salt baths are for me. I also love love love the Japanese Mint Lotion Bar – especially after a long day!
What environment do you like to work in?
I like to work early in the morning when the sun is just coming up – I find the world is still waking up and it’s refreshing. I’m a morning person and find I’m freshest and clearest in the morning
Do you listen to music while you work, and if so what do you listen to?
Ohhhh I love music! I often listen to my radio – and I listen to CBC 3 which plays all kinds of great Canadian music! I’m listening lots to Hannah Georgas and Cat Power!

What are you currently working on? I’m creating and brainstorming all sorts of summer products. I’ve been busy making facial mists with aloe vera and witch hazel and different herbal floral waters – perfect for cooling off in the summer. I’m also working on some different cosmetic products including body bronzers and shimmers.
What are your plans for the near future?
I’m working on some BIG ideas for the future…. I’m hoping to open my own locally made consignment shop in the next year or so, which would exhibit all kinds of amazing local crafters! What was the best advice given to you as an artist?
